CRC and CCI propose calculation tools for:

(1) predicting paper lifetime

(2) simulate paper decay

Paper degradation occurs primarily through an acid-catalysed hydrolysis reaction. Temperature (T) and relative humidity (RH) affect the degradation rate. Following several years of collaborative research, CRC and CCI propose in OPEN ACCESS

  • A calculator for predicting the lifespan of paper through the application of the isopermanence concept (« isoperm »). The calculator allows users to explore the impact of different T and RH combinations on the long-term preservation of paper-based collections. The prediction is based on the activation energy for three types of papers : acid newsprint, acid fine paper and alkaline fine paper.
  • Isoperms histogramm

  • A simulator of paper decay, quantified through two different physical properties: (i) the degree of polymerisation (DP), referring to the average length of the cellulose polymers, and (ii) the zero-span breaking length (BL), referring to the average mechanical resistance of the paper.

An update is available now! The new version graphically illustrates the variations in the correlation between cellulose chain lengths and paper’s mechanical strength, depending on the different climate scenarios. Try it !

  • graph prediction DP & BL vs t

These tools are also available on the CCI website.
