EPR (Electron Paramagnetic Resonance) is a spectroscopic technique able to spot and analyze paramagnetic species in samples. Paramagnetic species include radicals and common metal ions like Fe(III), Cu(II), Mn(II), which occur frequently and abundantely in ancient and degraded paper (even blank). We show that these metal ions and radicals give specific indications about degradation and trasformation reactions occurring in paper, suggesting that these ions play a relevant role in paper degradation.
